Description: On April 30, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock will headline a star-studded sunset concert in New York City at the UN General Assembly Hall.  Hosted by Morgan Freeman, Robert DeNiro, Michael Douglas, and Quincy Jones, this concert celebrates International Jazz Day—a day intended to unite communities all over the world to learn about the art of jazz, its roots, and its impact.
 
The performer lineup includes Dee Dee Bridgewater, Wynton Marsalis, Wayne Shorter, Christian McBride, Esperanza Spalding, Jack DeJohnette, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, and Jimmy Heath.  The Americans will be joined by an international cast of musicians spanning different genres, including Richard Bona (Cameroon), Hiromi Uehara (Japan), Zakir Hussain (India), Angelique Kidjo (Benin), Lang Lang (China), Eli Degibri (Israel), and Romero Lubambo (Brazil).  Tune in for this two-hour musical event!

Applications Being Accepted for Hungarian-American Fulbright Commission Executive Director

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Hungarian-American Fulbright Commission

Applications are invited from Hungarian and American citizens for the position of Executive Director of the Hungarian-American Fulbright Commission, a non-profit, bi-national educational organization located in Budapest, Hungary, responsible for administering the Fulbright academic exchange program between Hungary and the United States. Its vision is to promote the exchange of ideas, information and knowledge between the people of Hungary and the United States, thereby adding to the intellectual capital of both countries and increasing mutual understanding. The Commission’s programs are administered in cooperation with the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and the Hungarian Ministry of National Resources.

The Executive Director is responsible for long-term planning and the day-to-day management of the Commission's wide range of programs and activities. The Director reports to a bi-national Board of Directors, which oversees all activities. Duties include appointing and supervising the Commission's 7-member staff, managing the Commission’s annual budget and internal financial control system, and preparing reports for the Commission’s Board and the funding governments. The Director is expected to monitor the program, make recommendations to the Board on measures to ensure its sustainability and growth, and coordinate an established fund-raising program. The Commission also operates an EducationUSA Advising Center and a Computer Based Test Center. The Director supervises the activities and development plans of these centers. Travel within Hungary and internationally is required.

Essential Qualifications:

• A minimum of five years professional experience in higher education or related fields;
• Thorough understanding of Hungarian and U.S. society, culture and educational systems;
• Demonstrated experience in program and financial management, academic exchanges, personnel administration and fundraising/outreach/public relations;
• A proven track record of dynamic leadership, strategic planning and organizational innovation, and the ability to lead and motivate the Fulbright team and Hungarian Fulbright community;
• Ability to interact effectively with academics, government officials, NGOs and business leaders;
• Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, including public speaking; fluency in English and Hungarian;
• Familiarity with modern information systems (social media, Internet, e-mail, other media);
• An advanced degree from a U.S. or European university;

A two-year, renewable contract will be offered to the successful candidate beginning around July 15, 2012. Salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience and qualifications. On behalf of the organising committee we are happy to announce that the English and American Studies Institute, University of Pannonia, the American Corner Veszprém, Eötvös Károly County Library and the Petőfi Theatre of Veszprém will organize the fourth annual festival of amateur theatre in English on 4-5 May, 2012. The 4th National English Language Drama Festival in Veszprém, 2012 intends to provide opportunities for theatre-lovers to prove their talent on stage in English. Any productions from any college/university and secondary school are welcome. Plays must be in the English language and should keep the audience in its seat for 20-100 minutes.
 
We look forward to productions:
from any college or university and secondary school as long as the cast is made up of Hungarian students speaking English as a foreign language of the above institutions (students or graduated students of the above Institutes),
the shows are in English and the running time does not exceed 100 minutes but keeps the audience in its seat for at least 20 minutes.
 
Different, valuable prizes will be awarded to the best performances as well as to actors and actresses in two categories: adult and secondary school category based on the decision of a distinguished jury.
 
The festival (for the participants) will be totally free of cost.

Az Institute of International Education (IIE) Európai Iroda az Egyesült Államok-beli Sewanee: The University of the South felkérésére örömmel értesiti a magyar középiskolák kiemelkedő tanulmányi eredménnyel rendelkező végzős tanulóit az alábbi ösztöndíjlehetőségről.

A Klein Family Scholarship a magyar származású Linda Klein számára állít emléket, aki maga is a Sewanee egyetem diákja volt. Az ösztöndíj egy magyar, a középiskolai tanulmányait a 2011-2012. tanévben befejező diák számára nyújt teljes anyagi támogatást a Bachelor képzés időtartamára, mely általában 4 év.

Az egyetem székhelye Sewanee, mely Tennessee államban található. Az intézmény, bár itthon kevéssé ismert, igen színvonalas, az amerikai "liberal arts" filozófián alapuló képzést és tanulási feltételeket nyújt (honlapjuk: www.sewanee.edu).

A pályázás menete:

A pályázás első szakaszában az IIE egy előszelekció során 4 - 5 ígéretes pályázót választ ki. Ezt követően a Sewanee Egyetem felvételi osztálya választja ki az IIE jelöltjei közül a végső nyertest az intézmény saját felvételi követelményei alapján. Erről a második körös felvételi folyamatról az előszelekció során kiválasztott pályázókat részletesen tájékoztatjuk majd.

Az előpályázatok benyújtását olyan diákoktól várjuk, akik megfelelnek az angol nyelvű pályázati kiírásban szereplő követelményeknek.

A Call for Application for the FY2012 Community Solutions Professionals Fellows Program

The International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX) is looking for applications to a U.S. based community leadership program for civic and community leaders.

Based on their professional interests IREX will place approximately 68 participants in internships for four months with community-based organizations or government offices throughout the United States.

The program will focus on the theme “Accountability and Transparency” and will provide the participants with enhanced practical expertise, leadership skills and professional contacts to address issues in their own communities. Using  a combination of traditional learning styles, educational environments and web-based technologies, IREX will create an online Community Leadership Institute to provide the fellows  with up to 500 hours of structured  leadership training  during the U.S. exchange.

The U.S. State Department’s Office of English Language Programs is pleased to offer its fourth Webinar course entitled Shaping the Way We Teach English. The 5 online seminars of the course cover a variety of topics and are intended for teachers of English or future teachers of English around the world. Participants are encouraged to join the associated Ning (http://www.shapingenglish.ning.com) to participate in discussions, view or download video and other materials from the sessions, and access recordings of the webinars.

 The series will run from October 5 to November 30, 2011. Each 90-minute webinar will take place every other Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. in Washington, DC (check http://timeanddate.com for the time in your region).

 For the series of 5 webinars (see thematic schedule below), we altogether have 40 slots for the whole Central and Southeastern Europe, and we still have fairly many available.  We would love to include colleagues from your country, as well, so please do e-mail me if you, your colleagues, and/or your EFL contacts are interested.

The schedule:

The U.S. Embassy in Budapest is looking for a certified, experienced, and flexible English as a Foreign Language instructor, preferably with native or near native Hungarian and experience in teaching Business English. The Instructor would provide 2x50 minute intermediate or upper intermediate classes on every weekday here at the embassy to two of our interns from Hungary. Learners will be Hungarian senior year university students or recent graduates who get accepted into the embassy's Professional Training Program for Roma.  You may find out more about this internship program on the following U.S. Embassy webpage: http://hungarian.hungary.usembassy.gov/pr_09092011a.html

 The program is expected to run from late October/early November 2011 till the end of June 2012 and will include three 2-month periods. During each of these two month periods, language classes will be provided for two learners (interns).  Expected duration of each language course: 8 weeks.  Expected total number of teaching weeks within the late October 2011-end of June 2012 period: 24.

Debate Programs Get $20 Million Boost on Campuses Worldwide

"Debate helps students develop critical thinking and public speaking skills and challenges them to consider global issues from a perspective other than their own,” said Noel Selegzi, director of the Youth Initiative at the Open Society Foundations which houses the new Global Debates program.

“Debate is a key component to an open society and encourages new ideas, reasoned arguments, and open minds.”

The Foundations decided to launch Global Debates around the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks to help ensure that young people are taught the skills necessary to debate the public policy issues of our day. An unforeseen consequence of the U.S. “war on terror” was the stifling of public discussion and the free flow of information.

“Today’s undergraduates are the first to come of age in a post 9/11 world. Students around the world have few if any recollections of a time before the ‘war on terror,’” said Selegzi.  “Debate helps us recognize that public policy is best developed when the force of an argument, and not the argument of force, is most potent.”

 The Open Society Foundations will provide up to three years of funding to colleges, universities, and other educational institutions to integrate debate across disciplines. The International Debate Education Association will implement the programs and help the Open Society Foundations identify and provide support to grantees. 

Global Debates continues the Open Society Foundations’ long-standing commitment to providing young people with access to quality higher education. Grants will be available for institutions that have either very small debate programs or none at all. Grants will also be made to institutions seeking to promote public debates within the broader communities that they serve and to increase the capacity of young people from marginalized communities to engage in debates concerning controversial issues affecting their lives.  

Funding will also support the creation of educational materials; an online debate mentorship program; international debate tournaments and competitions; a Global Debate and Public Policy Challenge, which will bring together the world's best university debaters, policy makers, and academics to address an issue of global concern; and a series of Open Society Debates around the world that will address issues of global concern. 

Since 1993, the Open Society Foundations have worked to ensure that young people have opportunities to develop the ability to engage in open and informed debates on critical global issues of our time, including climate change, nuclear proliferation, and genocide.

Ingyenes angol nyelvi nyári táborok a Balatonnál

A Budapesti Amerikai Nagykövetség 2006. óta immár hatodik alkalommal rendezi meg az angol nyelvi és tolerancia táborait. A táborokba felvételt nyert csoportok számára a részvétel teljesen ingyenes, beleértve az angol nyelvi órákat, az oda- és visszautazást, a szállást és napi négyszeri étkezést, és a helyi érdekesebbnél érdekesebb programokat is.

 A táborokra kizárólag csoportosan lehet jelentkezni. A csoport azt jelenti, hogy egy adott magyarországi oktatási intézményben oktató angoltanár és öt 11-13 éves, angolul tanuló diákjuk alkotnak egy jelentkező csoportot. Első körben az angol szakos tanár angol nyelvű önéletrajzát és motivációs levelét várjuk, amelyben elmondja, hogy miért is lenne hasznos számára, illetve diákjai számara az adott tábor.

Call for Applications for the 2011 Benjamin Franklin Summer Institute

Nazareth College of Rochester, N.Y. and the University of Pannonia, Veszprém, Hungary are starting a brand-new master's program in American Studies for those who are interested in all the different aspects of American culture, literature, history, politics, arts, music and they would like to learn about all these not just from an American but also from a Hungarian, European point of view.

The program results in a degree issued by Nazareth college but students also have the chance to visit scenic Veszprém for one or two semesters during their studies. The perspective this international cooperation offers is unique just like the possibility to learn the Hungarian language and to learn about European and Hungarian culture throughout this hands-on experience just as a bonus.

Recently, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that Hungary will be one of 53 countries whose nationals are eligible to participate in the H-2A and H-2B programs.

 The H-2A program allows U.S. employers to bring foreign nationals to the United States to fill temporary agricultural jobs; the H-2B program allows U.S. employers to bring foreign nationals to the United States for temporary, non-agricultural jobs.

 For both H-2A and H-2B work visas, U.S. employers must first file Form I-129, Petition for Nonimmigrant Worker, with USCIS.  Only once this form is approved can a prospective employee apply for a visa at the U.S. Embassy.  Approval of a petition does not guarantee visa issuance.

 Generally for a job to qualify for a H-2A or H-2B category, a U.S. employer needs to demonstrate that the job is temporary, that there are not sufficient U.S. workers who are able, qualified or available to do the work and that the employment of a foreign national will not adversely affect the wages or working conditions of similarly employed U.S. workers.  There is an annual worldwide cap of 66,000 for the H-2B category.

 The period of stay allowed for H-2A or H-2B classification is determined by the temporary labor certificate, but is generally no longer than 1 year.

 This is the first time since 2009 that Hungarian nationals have been able to apply for H-2A and H-2B visas.

 Az Egyesült Államok Állampolgársági és Bevándorlási Szolgálata (USCIS) nemrégiben bejelentette, hogy Magyarországot is felvette annak az 53 országnak a listájára, amelyek állampolgárai számára lehetőség nyílik a H-2A és a H-2B programokban való részvételre.

 A H-2A program engedélyezi amerikai munkaadóknak, hogy ideiglenes mezőgazdasági munkák elvégzésére idegen állampolgárokat hozzanak be az Egyesült Államokba, a H-2B program pedig azt engedélyezi amerikai munkaadóknak, hogy ideiglenes, nem mezőgazdasági munkák elvégzésére idegen állampolgárokat hozzanak be az Egyesült Államokba.

 Mind a H-2A, mind a H-2B munkvállalói vízumhoz az szükséges, hogy az amerikai munkaadó először benyújtsa a „Form I-129” jelű, nem-bevándorló dolgozó kérvényezésére szolgáló formanyomtatványt az USCIS-nál.  A reménybeli alkalmazott csak az után folyamodhat vízumért az Amerikai Nagykövetségen, ha ezt a kérvényt már jóváhagyták.  A kérvény jóváhagyása nem garantálja a vízum kiadását.

 Általában ahhoz, hogy valamely munka bekerüljön a H-2A vagy H-2B kategóriába, a munkaadónak bizonyítania kell, hogy a munka ideiglenes, hogy nem áll rendelkezésre elégséges számú, munkaképes, megfelelően képzett amerikai munkaerő, és hogy az idegen állampolgár alkalmazása nem befolyásolja károsan a hasonló alkalmazásban dolgozó amerikai munkásoknak sem a munkabérét, sem a munkakörülményeit.  A H-2B kategórát illetően a világ minden országára együttesen 66 000 személyre szóló éves felső határ van érvényben.

 A H-2A vagy H-2B klasszifikációra érvényes tartózkodási idő hosszát az ideiglenes munkavállalói igazolvány határozza meg, de általában nem hosszabb egy évnél.

 2009. óta most először nyílik magyar állampolgároknak lehetőségük arra, hogy H-2A vagy H-2B vízumért folyamodjanak.

BARD COLLEGE CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC TO HOLD AUDITIONS IN BUDAPEST ON OCTOBER 5 FOR FALL 2011 UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSION

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.— The Bard College Conservatory of Music, located in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, U.S.A., will hold auditions for Fall 2011 undergraduate admission in Budapest on Tuesday, October 5 from noon until 6 p.m.   The auditions will be held at the Nádor Terem located in the Elementary School for the Blind, 1146 Budapest, Ajtósi Dürer sor 39 (tel: 1- 344-7072). Secretary's Innovation Award for the Empowerment of Women and Girls: Call for Concept Papers

The Secretary’s Innovation Award for the Empowerment of Women and Girls seeks to find and bring to scale the most pioneering approaches to the political, economic and social empowerment of women and girls around the globe. Funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, the award is part of the State Department’s continuing emphasis on public-private partnerships, and is administered by its Office of Global Women’s Issues. The award, and the office, are founded on the premise that the major economic, security, governance and environmental challenges of our time cannot be solved without the full participation of women at all levels of society.

The purpose of this announcement is to invite interested parties to submit a concept paper that describes innovations that have proven to have a positive impact on the lives of women and girls politically, socially, or economically. The concept paper should: (1) describe the innovation, (2) how it has been successful, and, (3) how it can be supported and enlarged with additional financial support to empower women and girls in their communities.

Each year, two awardees are selected by a prominent panel of jury and receive up to $500,000 to expand on their innovations. Concept papers can be submitted either by individuals or by non-governmental organizations. There are no restrictions as to citizenship or country of residency.

Concept papers are due by June 21, 2010.

2010 Tolerance Video Competition: "Celebrate Diversity”

The American Embassy in Budapest is sponsoring the second annual Tolerance Video Competition to highlight to importance of celebrating diversity. High school students in Hungary are invited to submit a short video clip on YouTube that captures the message of celebrating diversity in a creative, imaginative, and thought-provoking way. Finalists will be invited to an awards ceremony in Budapest in April 2010.

Teacher Training Seminars and Call

 The objective of Centropa is to document the life of the Jews of East-Central Europe from the end of the 19th century to the present times and to disseminate these fascinating documents and photos collected by using the latest technology available (www.centropa.hu; www.centropa.org). One of our most novel project is the archive of DVD films entitled ’The History of Hungarian-Speaking Jews in the 20th Century: Blossoming, Destruction and Revival’. We would like to use these films primarily in secondary school education and we are preparing a syllabus for the teachers, which would enable them to incorporate our films in the teaching of Hungarian history. We are presenting this syllabus and working with the teachers with the film. We are working with them how to use Centropa films in the framework in the classroom.

 Through Centropa´s vast online archive and personal films on Jewish family stories from the 20^th century, students and teachers in Central Europe have a great opportunity to understand their region´s rich cultural heritage. Our aim is to use modern technologies to produce online teaching materials which can be widely used in education.

 There is widespread ignorance concerning Jews in this part of Europe. In most educational institutions, the history of European Jewry is neglected in history classes and the Holocaust is mentioned in a few impersonal lines. Already overburdened with a crowded curriculum, teachers do not have any teaching aids to help them in their task.

 This is where Centropa comes in. believing the past two years, we have created a web and DVD-based, user-friendly educational program for Central European schools, and all the materials are based on our interview archive. 

Instead of only focusing on how Hungarian, Slovakian and Czech Jews were killed during the Holocaust, we also show how these Jews lived, and how many similarities there were between them and non-Jews. In short, we want to show that they have been part of ’us’ and not an isolated, foreign element in our countries. Therefore, we have created a series of personal short films about childhood, school, first love, family holidays, work, religion, etc., in short: about everyday life. Producing these films, which are based on old photos (mostly those of our interviewees) and excerpts from the original interviews read by professional actors, Centropa used the most modern technology. The result: a fascinating Library of Rescued Memoies which includes more than a dozen captivating short films… The films are available on both DVD and our multi-lingual website www.centropastudent.org, along with an interactive study guide which helps students to dig down deeper into each story.

 However, we are well aware of the fact that our teaching material is useful only if we can reach teachers and schools open to a new way of teaching Central-European Jewish history and of incorporating it into their curriculum and train them how to use our material. Thus, it is essential that we involve the teachers in the process of preparing the educational material and also train them how to best use them in class. 

 Our next teacher training seminar will be in 10^th of February 2010 and 2^nd and 3^rd of Marc 2010.

A szervezők a hallgatóság aktív közreműködésére számítanak s elvárják a teljes programon való részvételt.

• Angol nyelvű ajánlólevél, különösen munkahelyi ajánlás, melyben a munkahelyi vezető megerősíti, hogy sikeres pályázat esetén a tanulmányútról hazatérő ösztöndíjas munkájára számítanak, elvárják illetve lehetővé teszik számára, hogy az ösztöndíj ideje alatt szerzett tudást és tapasztalatot a tanszék/intézet oktatási tevékenységébe beillessze.

Roma Fellowship Program at U.S. Embassy Budapest

The Embassy of the United States in Budapest is pleased to announce the launch of its Roma Fellowship Program.   The aim of the program is to provide the participants with linguistic and professional experiences which will add to their future career opportunities.  Serving as an “introductory professionalization course”, the fellowship aims to develop basic skills that potential employers consider beneficial.  The Embassy is committed to ensure a fair and transparent selection process.

The program is designed for recently graduated Roma university or college students who must be Hungarian citizens.  Certificate of mid-level English knowledge is required.  The duration of the fellowship program will be two months.  Elements of the fellowship program will include a general orientation on the Embassy’s daily work, life coaching training, job-seeking and employment-related counseling, training in networking, public affairs, business processes and business operation, public speaking, and professional ethics, as well as financial training, researching and writing exercises, organizational tasks and networking duties.  In addition to enhancing various employment-related skills, benefits for the Fellow will include a written evaluation assessing his/her performance as well as a certificate acknowledging the Fellow’s service within the Embassy, and potential letters of recommendation.  Aiming to cover the costs of participation in the program, U.S. Embassy Budapest will provide a stipend and other support as appropriate.

To apply, please send a one-page CV and a statement of purpose outlining your general and professional objectives (a maximum of 2 pages) in English to the following e-mail address: roma_fellowship@usembassy.hu.  In case you are selected to be interviewed, please be prepared to present copies of your university or college diploma and of the English language certificate.  In order to be considered for selection please apply no later than September 14, 2009.

The AC Veszprem keeps closed between June 29-July 31. During that time we pause with our regular programs.

After the summer recess we open at 14.00 p.m. on Monday, August 3, 2009.

A wide range of plays in the English language performed by groups from the Ady Endre Grammar School Debrecen, the American Corner, Debrecen, the Pázmány Péter Catholic University, the University of Debrecen and the University of Pannonia.

Entrance fees are 800 HUF for the whole festival, 300 HUF per performance.

Egy év kihagyással a Hoops Starz versenysorozat május 23-án újból visszatér arra a helyszínre, ahonnan 2003-ban elindult. Aki szeret kosarazni, és kedvet érez arra, hogy részt vegyen ezen a rendhagyó sporteseményen, annak nem kell mást tennie, mint jelentkezni a versenyre, ahol a győztes csapat nemcsak a veszprémi forduló legjobbja lesz, hanem bejut a siófoki országos döntőbe is, ahol különleges nyeremények várnak a bajnokra. A felújított pályán tehát, ezúttal is főszerepben a játék, a hip-hop zene, és a jó hangulat. Gyertek el minél többen, és töltsetek el egy egész napot a streetball jegyében.

2009 CCUSA Camp Fair (Gyerektábori Munkák Állásbörzéje)

A Magyarországon 19 éve jelenlevő CCUSA szervezet idén is megrendezi amerikai állásbörzéjét, ahol a 2009 június és augusztus közötti időszakra lehet megpályázni nyári munkákat az Újvilágban. Elsősorban 18 év feletti nappali tagozatos diákok jelentkezését várjuk.

Időpont: 2009 március 7, szombat, 12.00-16.00

Helyszín: Westend City Center - Hilton Hotel (Nyugati pu mellett)
