From a Strip of Asphalt to an American Icon
Route 66
October 11, 6 pm

“Route 66. Just the name is magic. Route 66. It conjures up all kinds of images. Route 66. An artery linking much of the nation. Route 66. An inspiration to literature, music, drama, art, and a nation of dreamers. Route 66. A highway fashioned from vision and ingenuity. Route 66. A broken chain of concrete and asphalt. Route 66. It has forever meant ’going somewhere’” (Michael Wallis). This presentation, while attempting to leave undisturbed the magic that Wallis mentions above – and many of us, even from a distance of thousands of miles also recognize – will address the birth and the early decades of “the Main Street of America,” its role in US history, automobility and culture, as well as the stark contrast between its current state of physical disrepair and permanent iconic status.

Speaker: Dr. Zoltan Simon, UD IEAS, North American Department

Meredith will discuss and present images of her work, sources of inspiration, process, and studios in Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, New York and Hungary where she has prepared work for Project Terrain. Meredith lives in Boston Massachusetts.

MYOWA
A close encounter with the Hawkeye State
September 27, 6.30 pm

"For me, it has become easier to appreciate where I came from as I move further away. I love to experience new cultures, but I take Iowa with me wherever I go. Iowa might often be overlooked in favor of the glamour of New York orCalifornia, but I owe much of who I am to the Iowacommunities in which I was raised. Learn about the roleIowa plays in the United States through the eyes of a native. Appreciate the romantic qualities of Iowa’s small towns. I want to share a little of Iowa with Hungary. Small and humble, the state of Iowa is a beautiful piece of the United States, with grain-bins full of friendly people, one-of-a-kind attractions, and farm jokes!”

Speaker: Robin Whitford, Fulbright Teaching Assistant
 Length: 40 mins
