Venue: DOTE 2 dormitory, Mosaic Bar

I feel most alive when I’m writing things down. I like the pictures more than the words. I love writing you. You most of all. To write a boy?! I enclose a picture instead. I feel like a true lover when I am writing you. You could start telephoning me. You can’t hang up on letters. You can tear them up, though. You can tear me up and throw me out or keep me and read me today, tomorrow, any time you want until you die.

June 7, 7 pm
Mud Nostalgia
Venue: Studio 111, University of Debrecen, main building

Mud Nostalgia, written by Ohio playwright Mark Evans Bryan and performed by Sue Ott Rowlands, explores the rich tradition of the Appalachian region of the United States through the unique spiritual traditions of the mountain holiness religions, specifically the serpent-handling churches. Blending music, movement, and narrative, Ott Rowlands and her collaborator and director, Bruce Hermann, bring to life the... story of a young holiness woman struggling to understand her life and her faith in light of a devastating act of betrayal. Having barely survived staggering abuse at the hands of her husband, she desperately seeks understanding - her own and ours. Handling snakes, she explains, is "one half faith in the Holy Spirit and one half faith in modern doctors." Combining humor, traditional Appalachian music, and personal reflections on the nature of life and love, Mud Nostalgia offers a touching glimpse of the beauty of the spiritual faith and the tenacity of the human spirit.

Sue Ott Rowlands is an actor, director, and international arts collaborator who performs her one-woman shows extensively around the world. She is Professor of Theatre and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Mark Evans Bryan is Associate Professor of Theatre at Denison University in Ohio. He is a theatre historian and playwright. Mud Nostalgia is his third collaboration with Ott Rowlands.

Bruce Hermann is an actor and director. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Theatre at Texas Tech University. Mud Nostalgia follows his successful collaboration with Ott Rowlands in fig. 1, also written by Mark Evans Bryan.
