Apáczai High School
May 15, 2013
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Presenter | RYAN SMITH, Fulbright Grantee
Topic | Great Gatsby and the Jazz Era
The approaching release of Baz Luhrmann's much talked-about film The Great Gatsby, has renewed public interest in the novel by F Scott Fitzgerald. Many consider this novel the best, or at least one of the best works of American literature. It is set in New York City in the summer of 1922, a time of unprecedented American prosperity and power, a time commonly called The Roaring Twenties or The Jazz Age, the later a term Fitzgerald coined himself. Jazz represents the age because of its rebellion against social norms, unpredictability, and because it was wildly fun. Fitzgerald's masterpiece has connected with readers since it's publication in 1925 because of its themes of love, striving, marriage, wealth, honesty, and regret. To increase interest in the most American of stories and excitement for the film, American Corner Budapest will host a after school discussion group of local high school students.

“Real reading is a lonely activity.” – said Harold Bloom. On one Thursday evening each month, we would like to prove that reading can, indeed, be a social event as well. Whether you are often startled after reading a story and have a lot of questions or you tend to understand everything and have a lot of answers, join us! Let’s connect this “lonely activity” with creative and engaging exercises, let’s exchange viewpoints, and twist stories around; let’s Kindle new ideas! The approaching release of Baz Luhrmann's much talked-about film The Great Gatsby, has renewed public interest in the novel by F Scott Fitzgerald. 2013 JUNE | SUMMER FESTIVALS
June 4, 2013 | Tuesday
5:30 - 6:30 PM
TALC | Tuesday American Language Club #39 Free Discussion with Native Speakers
Presenter | RYAN SMITH | Fulbright Grantee
Topic | The Great Gatsby as the Great American Novel
Location | AC Budapest | Corvinus University |Salt House Building | Fővám tér 13-15.
On the final typed draft of his novel, F. Scott Fitzgerald crossed out the original title Under the Red, White, and Blue and hand wrote The Great Gatsby. His aim, as had been so many before and after him, was to write The Great American Novel, the quintessential American novel, the book that captured the nation and its people like none had before. Has Fitzgerald done this? What does Gatsby celebrate and critique about American society and American people? How does the novel capture both the 1920s and modern day America?
At the American Corner Budapest`s present TALC session, we will learn a little about the wild celebrity writer Fitzgerald, look closely at passages and themes in the novel, and talk briefly about the recent film. After hoping it would sell 10,000, it has sold over 25 million copies. Let's add our voices to this vast conversation about the book and the nation it tries to capture.
